Exciting mountain biking route in the provinces of Bulgan and Selenge, south of the border with Siberia. We travel by train from Ulaanbaatar to the start of the trail at the copper mining city of Erdenet. The mountains, forests, rivers and valleys we ride through are remote, inhabited only by nomadic families with their herds of animals. Towards the end of the trail, when we still feel as though we are in the middle of nowhere, we suddenly come upon the fantastic Amarbayasgalant monastery. It was built in the early 18th century during the period of Manchu domination, and is one of the largest and best Buddhist monasteries in the country.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY
ACCOMMODATION WILL BE WILD CAMPING IN TENTS WITH NO LUXURIOUS FACILITIES
DAY 1
Arrive in 'Ulaanbaatar' and go to hotel. Afternoon free time to see the city or just relax. Overnight in hotel.
DAY 2
Free day in Ulaanbaatar for sightseeing. Evening board train 'Train' to Erdenet copper mining town, with sleeping 'Compartments'. Overnight on train.
DAY 4
Ride beside the winding river, lined with willow trees and poplar. The valley opens out into cultivated fields near the 'Selenge' river. Overnight camping.
DAY 5
Ride through "Inget Tolgoi" village and up into virgin silver birch forest, home of wolves and wild boar. Cross two 'Mountain Passes' then descend to the Selenge river to camp.
DAY 6
Ride through 'Khyalgant' village, then head east into the hills. Cross another wooded pass on a rough rocky track, then descend to a fertile valley to camp.
DAY 7
Follow the track over the mountains, passing through valleys inhabited by many nomadic families. Overnight camping near 'Amarbayasgalant' monastery.
DAY 8
Morning visit the fascinating 'Buddhist Monastery' located in this remote valley. Afternoon return to Ulaanbaatar by jeep. Overnight hotel.
DAY 9
Departure.

Bulgan Mountain Biking Tour Map
The tour begins by train from Ulaanbaatar to Erdenet City, then cycle through the mountains and valleys of Bulgan and Selenge provinces, finishing at Amarbayasgalant monastery. Mongolia is a great place for a mountain biking tour, but this route is remote and the terrain rough. In parts of the country there are no facilities for tourists so we camp in the wilderness.

Mountain Biking Tour - Bikes "Specialized" RockHopper
"Bike Mongolia" have SCHWINN and SPECIALIZED mountain bikes with front suspension hard tail, in a variety of sizes, available for hire. You can bring your own bike if you prefer. SPECIALIZED "Rockhopper" fully butted, smooth-welded M4 alloy super light frame with integrated head tube and asymmetrical seat stays offers a quick, responsive and compliant ride, whilst performance components and parts such as Rockshox Recon forks and Avid Juicy hydraulic brakes offer excellent quality.
MTB TOUR GRADING
We have designed all our own routes and know the track, scenery, river crossings or bridges, climbs or technical sections, and camping places for each trip. The combined use of jeeps and bikes allows us to see a substantial part of Mongolia, with its wild and varied scenery. Daily riding distances vary from 70 - 100 km, therefore stamina is required.
